To the editor:
Think back to Sunday night, 2 a.m., where were you? If you were up half the night finishing that paper that was due at your Monday 8 a.m. class, you probably aren't sitting here reading. However, if you have an entrepreneurial spirit, I'll give you a free idea.
In your left hand, FedEx Kinko's. Print. Copy. Fax, office supplies, presentation supplies, maybe a few computers, and don't forget the Wi-Fi. In your right hand, a coffee shop. It doesn't have to be fancy caffeine: coffee, tea, energy drinks. Snacks, you can't forget the snacks. Plenty of tables and outlets, maybe even those fancy USB outlets. Possibly have a few segregated rooms for meetings. Slam them together and have it open 24/7.
Cedar Rapids is home to Kirkwood, Mount Mercy, and Coe, as well as commuters to the Iowa City area. Not to mention small businesses and entrepreneurs. This city lacks a space of productivity for those thinkers who excel in the quiet calm of the night.
I'd suggest opening a coffee shop 24/7, but how great would it be to not have to run to Wal-Mart because I don't have something I need or plan on waking up earlier to hit up the library because I don't own a printer. You could be a gathering place to those who aren't up for the bars Saturday night, but still want to get out of the house with friends. If you put Card's Against Humanity on the shelf, they will come.
