Letters: Remembering Hutchinson’s Ice Cream

Recently, I was talking with a good friend Joan about the late 1930s when we were growing up. She asked if I remembered Hutchinson's Ice Cream. Of course, I said. She went on and said you can't forget their fudgicals, push-ups, drumsticks and Popsicles.
Hutchinson's was very important to our family. My brother, Marty, worked there on Sunday's in 1939 when he was a student at Coe College. He answered the phone from customers who ran out of cartons of ice cream and frozen treats. A full-time driver named Mike came in and picked up new orders to be delivered. At the same time, he brought back broken fudgicals, drumsticks, and the like to be replaced. There was nothing wrong with them - just broken. I also remember my Mother putting together a basket from our dinner at home and taking it down to Marty around 2 p.m. My sister and I road down with Mom and if we were lucky we might take a broken push-up or frozen treat home.
We both thought these were great times and continued to discuss the past.
Hutchinson's was acquired by Borden's later on. They knew a good thing when they saw it.
