The city of Cedar Rapids will end the curbside collection of residential flood debris tomorrow, city officials said today.
The service had been provided through funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), but that funding will be ending this month.
Here's the news release from the city:
The City of Cedar Rapids Solid Waste and Recycling Division has coordinated the removal of 41,771 tons of residential flood debris since the flood of 2008. This service has been provided in cooperation with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The City would like to extend a “Thank you” to all the homeowners and volunteers that diligently placed flood debris into separate piles, helping the collection process run smoothly. The City of Cedar Rapids Solid Waste and Recycling Division reminds all 2008 flood affected residents that residential flood debris collection is ending November 25,2009 due to the discontinuation of FEMA funding for this project. At this time, property owners must find alternate means of removing flood debris from their property. City crews will only collect debris on the street this week as a final clean-up.
