CEDAR RAPIDS - State Rep. Pat Murphy has opened a sizable lead in the race for the Democratic nomination in Iowa's 1st District.
A Loras College Poll released this morning shows Murphy capturing 34.7 percent of the vote in the five-way June 3 primary. Cedar Rapids City Councilwoman Monica Vernon and former lawmaker and utility regulator Swati Dandekar are tied at 11. 3 percent in the poll of 300 likely 1st District Democratic primary voters May 14-15. The poll's margin of error is 5.65 percent.
Rounding out the field are State Rep. Anesa Kajtazovic of Waterloo at 9.3 percent and Cedar Rapids attorney Dave O'Brien at 3.3 percent. Another 28.7 percent were undecided.
He results are particularly good news for Murphy because he is within striking distance of the 35 percent required by state law to win the nomination. If no one reaches that threshold June 3, the nominee will be determined by delegates at a June 14 district convention. Delegates will vote until one candidate gets 50 percent of the votes cast.
