Links on potential Iowa candidates; Keno out?
Mar. 18, 2010 1:02 pm
With Iowa in its coaching search's infancy, the names are tossed out there with ease. Here's a quick way to get to know some potential Iowa candidates, and Lord knows there will be more names out there fairly soon.
THE HEAD COACHES
UTEP coach Tony Barbee. Resume includes recruiting prowess at Memphis and a 26-6 record in El Paso, Texas. Rumors are that Auburn and DePaul are courting him, which he denied in angry fashion.
Baylor Coach Scott Drew. He has completed one of the greatest turnarounds in college sports, taking Baylor from the shadow of NCAA sanctions and a player-on-player murder to the top 20 this year. In fact, some think he's building a dynasty in Waco, Texas.
Providence Coach Keno Davis. We all know he's the prodigal son for Iowa, but it looks like it won't happen. Here's a different look at Keno from an East Coast point of view. According to Jeff Goodman from Fox Sports, Davis promised a recruit he'd stay at Providence. This via Twitter: Brewster Academy guard Naadir Tharpe, according to source, will commit to Providence tonight (Wednesday). Nice get by Keno Davis and Pat Skerry. ... Tharpe chose Providence over Boston College. Source said Keno Davis assured Tharpe he will not be going to Iowa.
Tennessee Coach Bruce Pearl. Today he talks about his relationship with San Diego State's Steve Fisher. Both recruited Michigan when they were Big Ten assistant coaches.
Northern Iowa Coach Ben Jacobson. All substance, little sizzle. Some write that UNI coaches are examples why people should stay in their happy place rather than risk it for the big time.
Oregon State Coach Craig Robinson. Yes, he's President Obama's brother-in-law, but he's coached the Beavers to a pair of postseason tournaments (albeit the CBI). He also just signed a two-year contract extension. But Oregon State's practice facilities are even worse than Iowa's current set-up, and, hey, Iowa would get even for Ralph Miller.
Richmond Coach Chris Mooney. The Spiders have beaten Missouri, Florida, Temple and Mississippi State this year. He's young, got Ivy League smarts and can recruit.
Illinois State Coach Tim Jankovich. The team slid back to the NIT this year, but Jankovich has KU recruiting roots.
St. Mary's Coach Randy Bennett. He's built a solid power in the West Coast Conference, a pretty decent mid-major league.
Brian Gregory, Dayton. He's guided the Flyers to the postseason the last two seasons, but would he want to compete with his best buddy Tom Izzo?
Steve Forbes, Tennessee. He's a Lone Tree native. Heck that's even Johnson County. Here's his bio.
Joe Dooley, Kansas. He's a
former head coach and now coaches under Bill Self at the nation's top-ranked school.
