CEDAR RAPIDS – The Kennedy baseball team will be playing with heavy hearts at Principal Park in Des Moines on Wednesday after losing beloved assistant coach Bill Herkelman to a stroke last week.
The Cougars will wear Herk's No. 29 on the back of their warm-up jerseys before their Class 4A quarterfinal game against Davenport North at 5 p.m.
This a veteran Kennedy team that was a state quarterfinalist last season and went 29-11 this year after opening the season ranked No. 1.
'They know what to expect when they get there,” Kennedy Coach Brett Hoyer said after the team's substate final win over Cedar Falls. 'They know the surroundings, so I think it will give us an advantage. I know they're hungry to get back there.”
The scoreboard displays Bill Herkelman's number '29' with the lights on at Herkelman Field at Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids on Friday, July 24, 2015. The longtime Kennedy coach passed away today after complications from a stroke. (Stephen Mally/The Gazette)
