Bill, known to many as Gabby, was born on Nov. 29, 1919, in Iowa City. He served in the U.S. Army at the Battle of the Bulge during World War II and later he served during the Korean War. He recently went on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. Bill was employed at the VAMC for 34 years.
Bill was instrumental in the development of the Iowa City Little League in 1956. The Little League started with 16 teams, two bags of equipment and 220 boys. Fourteen of the coaches were employed at VAMC. In 1959, a generous donor gave land to the city to develop the ballpark at City Park.
Bill lived a simple life. He was religious man. He taught Bible school and visited the sick. Bill was proud to serve his country, proud to be an avid Hawkeye supporter and a devoted friend too many.
Special thanks too all the caregivers at Sigourney Health Care Center for making Bill's life better.
Bill is survived by his nephews, Steve (Lynn) Dolan of Wittmann, Ariz., and Ed (Cindy) Dolan of Edwards, Mo.; and numerous extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mae (Hull) Williams.
