Unsanitary conditions found at Hiawatha animal rescue

State inspectors this week found unsanitary conditions inside a Hiawatha animal rescue facility, officials said.
Complaints from residents prompted police to visit The Puppy Playground, 85 North Center Point Rd., No. 70, on Monday. The officer reported a strong smell of urine, but did not witness any animals that were in “dire condition,” according to Hiawatha Police Chief Dennis Marks.
Police referred the case to the Iowa Department of Agriculture, and an inspection was conducted Tuesday. The operation, located in a strip mall, has a valid license to operate, but was overcrowded with dogs and cats and was deemed unsanitary, officials said.
No animals were seized from the facility, which remained open Friday.
“It was over capacity, so I don't think they could keep everything clean and care for all the animals,” said Dustin VandeHoef, spokesman for the Iowa Department of Agriculture.
According to the Secretary of State, Jennifer L. Wood filed the paperwork to incorporate the business in 2003. Wood declined to comment on the inspector's findings.
“We have no comment, and you can leave,” Wood told a reporter Friday.
VandeHoef said the inspector was told the facility had just received several more animals. Police were given a similar explanation.
“I think they probably just got in a little deep for the space that they have,” Marks said.
State law allows the business 15 days to come into compliance before any penalties are assessed, VandeHoef said. Fines are steep for facilities that don't comply with regulations, at up to $500 per day.
VandeHoef said an inspector would make follow-up visits to make sure the problems are fixed.
