Iowa's Peter Jok, Isaiah Moss sweep Big Ten weekly awards
Dec. 12, 2016 2:29 pm
IOWA CITY — The Big Ten has handed out five Player of the Week awards so far this season. Iowa senior Peter Jok has two of them.
Jok, who leads the Hawkeyes and the Big Ten in scoring at 23.8 points per game, grabbed his second Player of the Week award on Monday after a pair of games last week in which he averaged 19 points, 8.5 rebounds and five assists in wins against Stetson and then-No. 25 Iowa State.
His 23 points, nine rebounds and three assists against the Cyclones led all scorers and helped lead Iowa to its first win against in-state rival Iowa State since the 2012-13 season. The victory served as the first win for Jok against Iowa State — a team which has players Jok works out with in his off time.
'It means a lot because I've got a lot of friends on that team,' Jok said after the Iowa State game. 'Me and Monte (Morris), we talked a lot of trash before the game. For us to win, it (was) a great win as a team.'
Jok came close to a triple-double with 15 points, eight rebounds and a career-high seven assists against Stetson last Monday. He currently sits sixth in the nation in scoring behind leader Marcus Keane of Central Michigan, who averages 30.8 points per game.
Iowa's senior guard was joined by a redshirt freshman guard to sweep the weekly Big Ten awards. Isaiah Moss also was honored by the conference Monday, winning Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Moss has started the last four games for the Hawkeyes, starting with the Notre Dame game, but it was the last two games in which Moss broke out offensively.
He averaged 17.5 points, five rebounds and 1.5 steals in Iowa's wins against Stetson and Iowa State, with a career-high 21 points and six rebounds against Stetson. His 14 points against the Cyclones were part of a freshman trio, that also included Jordan Bohannon and Cordell Pemsl, who came up big for the Hawkeyes in their rivalry win.
'Offense-wise, I wasn't surprised, because he does it in practice all the time,' Jok said after the Iowa State game. 'I was really happy for him to finally get it out tonight in this game.'
Jok and Moss winning both awards gives Iowa its first sweep of the weekly men's honors since the inception of the weekly freshman award in 2010. Iowa also is the first team to sweep the awards in one week this season.
Iowa returns to game action on Saturday when it heads to Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines to face Northern Iowa in the Hy-Vee Classic. The game tips off at 3:30 p.m.
