Letter: City officials should listen to the voters

Regarding the April 16 article '‘Modest' 15-cent tax bump pitched for library”:
The voters voted against a library tax increase the last election so how can the city mayor and council arbitrarily invoke an increase in property taxes for the library?
That is exactly what President Barack Obama does when Congress won't give him what he wants and as far as I am concerned it is illegal. If the taxpayers vote something down, that means they don't want it and are willing to make do with shorter library hours, etc., because of it.
I guess the only way to fix the problem is to vote against the entire city council and mayor the next election and elect people who do the will of the people.
With all the additional housing, apartments, lofts and condos going in the city, those additional taxes should well take care of what the city needs for expenses.
It is time this council tightens the belt a bit like the rest of the taxpayers have had to do and get your spending in line with revenue taken in.
