Kathryn DeWald Shevik, 94, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014, at Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center, Cedar Rapids. Celebration of Life will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. There will be a light reception at the Legacy Center following the service where the family will greet friends. Burial will be at a later date in Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her sons, Richard (Carol) DeWald of LaCenter, Wash., and Rex (Janice) DeWald of Dallas; daughter, Becky DeWald of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Beau Butterbrodt, Carrie O'Callahan, Josh Bradford, Annie Bradford, Bradley DeWald and Andrea DeWald; and six great-grandchildren, Cole, Paige, Ben, Ava, Shea and Kellen.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, brothers, Reed Riley and George Forbes; and granddaughter, Becky Sue Butterbrodt.
Kathryn was born Dec. 22, 1919, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, daughter of Sidney and Myrtle (Colwell) Forbes. She was a book keeper her entire life and worked for Whipple Winterberg Burleson-Wilts and Shepard Insurance Agency. She later drove for Hertz Rental. On Oct. 24, 1939, she married Glen DeWald; they later divorced. She married Robert Shevik on July 27, 1966, at the Little Brown Church.
Kathryn was a member of Moose Lodge in Cedar Rapids. She hosted a coffee club in her home for many years after she retired, with Jo Marshall, Judy Thomson and Carol DeWald. Kathryn was a stamp collector, a Watkins dealer, a wonderful cook and welcomed everyone into her home for meals. Her passion was collecting state quarters.
