Mary Claire Doonan passed away May 12, 2016, at Northbrook Manor Care Center in Cedar Rapids at the age of 94. Cremation has taken place and by her request, a family graveside service will take place at a later date at Center Point Cemetery.
Mary gave birth to three children, Tim (Nancy) Doonan, Barbara (Tom) O'Brien and Brian Doonan. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Andrew (Nicole) Doonan, Elizabeth (Rob) McFarlane, Michael O'Brien, Adam (Michele) O'Brien, Jessica Doonan and Mike Doonan; two great-grandchildren, Charlie and Alex Marie; and one brother, Don Smith of California.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Dick Smith.
Mary was born in Central City, Iowa, in 1922, to parents, Raymond and Olive Smith. Mary graduated from a class of 13 at Center Point High School in 1940. She then married John Lee Doonan immediately after World War II and they were together 58 years. He preceded her in death in 2004.
Mary worked in sales for J.C. Penney in Cedar Rapids and then was office manager for Dr. Francis Wells, D.D.S., for 24 years.
She was steadfast in encouraging and supporting the activities and endeavors of her children and grandchildren. She was especially pleased to entertain her two beautiful great-grandchildren.
Mary was a very active member of St. James Methodist Church for over 50 years. She followed Iowa Hawkeye college basketball with devotion and longed for a Chicago Cubs baseball championship.
She will be dearly missed by her friends and family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. James Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids.
