An Iowa City woman is charged with assaulting a police officer after he responded to a report that the woman was lying in the middle of the street.
After receiving a medical call, police responded to the intersection of Oakcrest Street and Woodside Drive shortly before midnight Monday and tried to help Ayla G. Marshek, 21, of 1123 Tower Court, Apt. B, who was lying in the middle of the street partially covered in leaves.
Police said Marshek refused medical treatment and became verbally abusive when the officer told her she was under arrest. She struck an officer in the face with her fist after resisting being handcuffed, and continued to be verbally abusive thereafter, police said.
Marshek had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, poor balance and a blood-alcohol content of .282, according to police reports.
She is charged with assault on a peace officer and public intoxication, and was being held at the Johnson County Jail Tuesday morning.
