Shettler, Carl Edward
Carl Edward Shettler, 75, of South English, passed away Monday, June 18, 2012, at Mercy Iowa City. A Celebration of Life will be held at noon Saturday, June 23, at English River Church of the Brethren in South English, with visitation starting at 10 a.m. Burial will be at a later date. A luncheon will follow the celebration at the church.
Carl is survived by his wife, Sandra; children, Crystal (Robert) Stoner of Sigourney, Lora Lee (Gregg) Fisher of Keswick and Brad (Shawna) Shettler of Wayland; siblings, Don (Rose) Shettler of Coldwater, Mich., Cecil Shettler of Wellman, Fred (Mary) Shettler of Columbus Junction, Gary Shettler of Coralville, Kerm (Sharon) Shettler of Sigourney, Mary Lois Shettler of Iowa City and Rachel (Craig) Kohler of Washington, Iowa; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ruth Ann Shettler; and sister-in-law, Elda Shettler.
Carl was born May 7, 1937, in Wellman, Iowa, the son of Earl and Mary (Slaubaugh) Shettler. He married Sandra Lea Hahn on Sept. 6, 1958, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Carl worked at Amana Refrigeration from 1966 until his retirement in 1995.
Carl enjoyed the time he spent with his children and grandchildren. He loved to cook and bake pies for them. He also loved getting together over Christmas to make candy, especially peanut brittle, and rum cake.
Carl taught his children all about the art of hunting and fishing. He hunted for deer and turkey. He had a very kind nature and befriended a young man, Quinten Guillum, whom he considered a grandchild.
The first Saturday of the month, his siblings met for breakfast in Wellman and the chatter became quite loud at times.
The family would like to send their special thanks to the staff at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics they met, Dr. Bergus and Dr. Shivapour. They would also like to thank Iowa City Hospice, who were angels in helping them through this difficult time.
Memorial contributions can be donated in Carl's name to Iowa City Hospice.
