Martin, Wayne Edwin
Wayne Edwin Martin, 84, of Martelle, passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids from a long illness. Wayne's funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Linn Grove Presbyterian Church, 2000 Linn Grove Rd., rural Mount Vernon, where the family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until service time. Visitation will be today from 5 until 8 p.m. at Morgan Funeral Home Mount Vernon. Burial: Linn Grove Presbyterian Cemetery.
Surviving Wayne are his wife, Rebecca “Becky”; their children, Paul (Pauline) of Pendleton, Ore., Shirley (Daniel) Barklind of Grants Pass, Ore., and Darryl (Deb) Martin of Marion; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a brother, Charles (Nancy) Martin of Martelle; and two sisters, Ruth (Bernard) Switzer of Hiawatha and Margaret (Don) Koppenhaver of Mount Vernon.
Preceding Wayne in death were his parents and an infant daughter, Marilyn.
Wayne was born July 22, 1925, in rural Linn County, the son of Raymond and Gladys Strother Martin. He graduated from Martelle High School and served in the Navy during World War II. He married Rebecca Long on June 22, 1946, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He farmed the family farm west of Martelle until retirement.
He enjoyed fishing, bowling, winters in Florida, and was an avid Cubby fan. Fairness and honesty was his policy. Wayne loved his family most of all.
