Sheffler, Ruth L.
Ruth L. Sheffler, 92, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at the home of her daughter in Cincinnati, Ohio from a stroke-related illness. Ruth was formerly of Mount Auburn. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 6, at St. Paul United Methodist Church in La Porte City, with the Rev. Mike Gudka officiating. Interment will be held at West View Cemetery in La Porte City. Visitation also will be held at the church from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday.
Memorials may be sent to St. Paul United Methodist Church in La Porte City or to Hospice of Cincinnati, 4310 Cooper Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45242. Ruth was cared for by Hospice of Cincinnati.
Ruth was born July 21, 1917, near Mount Auburn, to Wilbur and Maude (Towe) Stevenson. On Nov. 25, 1937, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Sheffler at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple farmed and raised their family in the Mount Auburn area, and Ruth had lived on their farm for nearly 70 years. Lloyd preceded her in death on Aug. 27, 2004.
Ruth worked in 4-H, participated in church activities as a choir member, Sunday school teacher and circle member. She and her husband traveled throughout Canada, North America, and Europe. She bowled for many years in Vinton and sang in the Women's Barbershop Chorus.
Ruth was a devoted mother of David Sheffler of Mount Auburn, Leroy Sheffler of La Porte City and Diane (David) Calkins of Cincinnati, Ohio; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren who live in Iowa and North Carolina.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her stepmother, Rachel Stevenson; and her sisters, Mildred Happel and Beulah Bassett.
Phillips Funeral Home, Vinton, is assisting the family with arrangements.
