Stastny-Havlik, Margaret C. 'Granny'

Margaret C. “Granny” Stastny-Havlik, 95, of Solon, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, March 20, 2012. There will be a visitation Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Brosh Chapel, 100 S. Cedar St., Solon, one block east of Highway 1 on Main Street. Her wishes were to have her body donated to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Margaret is survived by her three children, Marvin (Bernita) Stastny of Solon, Audrey Selby of Urbandale and Doug (Sherri) Stastny of Kalona; six grandchildren, Mark Stastny, Kim (Larry) Hugen, Jackie (Mike) Simpson, Kate (Tom) Gaul, Cindy (Luis) Sanchez and Elysia Stastny; 11 great-grandchildren, Aaron and Emilia Stastny, Addison, Hank and Clay Hugen, Tim, Samantha and Wil Simpson, Tabitha (Ryan) Revenig and Kyle Gaul and Conner Sanchez; along with three stepgreat-grandchildren, Shannon Timmerman, Kristi Gaul and Kip Sanchez; and two sisters, Helen Hahn of Cedar Rapids and Dorothy Wiblishauser of Oxford Junction.

Margaret Catherine was born Monday, Jan. 1, 1917, in rural Johnson County, Solon, Iowa, to Catherine (Sheridan) and Rudolph Malatek. She married Hubert S. Stastny from Ely in 1936; he passed away in 1952. She then married Lavern Havlik and they later divorced.

She was a school bus driver, telephone operator, tavern owner and a beautician in Ely. In the early 1960s, she moved to North Liberty, where she was a beautician and then later moved to Iowa City, where she worked at Owens Brush, now Oral-B, for many years until her retirement in 1981. She then moved to Solon.

While living in Iowa City, Margaret rented out her upstairs rooms to college students. Granny loved to dance and played a good game of euchre. She also enjoyed crocheting, cross-stitch, and was an avid reader. Yard work and gardening were a passion of hers. Sports on the television (the Yankees) were also her favorite past time along with doing the daily crossword puzzle.

She will be greatly missed by her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and siblings, George and Bob Malatek.
