Altheide, Frederick Carroll
Frederick Carroll Altheide, 77, of Bolivar, Mo., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at Citizens Memorial Hospital, Bolivar. Fred was born Dec. 25, 1931, in Keokuk, Iowa, and spent his early years in Denver, Ill.
Fred was a four-year veteran of the United States Air Force, having served mostly in Hokkaido, Japan. After leaving the Air Force, he worked at Collins Radio for 17 years, until his retirement. He then earned a degree in psychology at the University of Kansas and was a substance abuse counselor at Lansing Correctional Facility in Kansas. Fred married Melba Alecock of Oquawka, Ill., on Nov. 14, 1955, and later married Melva Burchett on Oct. 30, 1988, in Lawrence, Kan.
Fred was preceded in death by his father, Harold Altheide; mother, Aileen Altheide; and brother, Gerald Altheide.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Melva Altheide of Bolivar; two sons, Steven (Erin) Altheide and Denis (Peggie) Altheide, all of Cedar Rapids; three daughters, Amy (Gary) Ellis of Walford, Erin (Bruce) Altheide Wheaton of Iowa City, and Melissa (Marty) Maxey of Navarre, Fla.; three sisters, Mabel Ann Randall and Darla Nelson, both of Galesburg, Ill., and Paula Ray of Boulder City, Nev.; one brother, Phillip Altheide of Galesburg, Ill.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is being planned for the spring in Bolivar, Mo.
