Lois A. Slye peacefully passed away at her daughter's home in Marion on Friday, July 6, of colon cancer.
She was born in Charles City on Sept. 9, 1923, to Ernest and Elizabeth Haller (Krueger). She graduated from Charles City High School and moved to Des Moines in 1944 to be a secretary to the superintendent of banking for the state of Iowa. In 1953, she married Donald Woolson Slye. With the exception of a few years in Cedar Rapids, they made their home on 47th Street in Des Moines. Lois lived there for 61 years before moving to Summit Pointe in Marion.
Lois worked part time at Sears before retiring in 1986. She and Don were members of Grace Lutheran Church and both faithful volunteers at the DMARC Food Pantry. Dancing and bowling were favorite pastimes. They enjoyed vacations with family and went on several bus trips before Don passed away in 2004. She enjoyed exercise and card groups at the Urbandale Senior Center, Mr. and Mrs. Club events, quilting, circle, Bible study and helping with the mailings at church. She was a member of PEO and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed shopping and getting together with friends. As she and friends aged, she often visited those who no longer were in their homes, and volunteered making baby caps at Iowa Lutheran Hospital.
Lois is survived by her son, Rick of Denver; daughter, Sue, and husband, Chris Taylor, of Marion; three grandchildren, Alec (Kelly) of Louisville, Ky., Paul (Katie) of Prosser, Wash., and Bethany of Newton. Her great-grandchildren, Benjamin Slye Taylor and Evelyn Lois Taylor, were gifts she cherished.
Lois was an inspiration to her family and friends with her welcoming nature, selfless acts, servant's heart and adventurous spirit. She will be greatly missed by many.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 27, and the memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, July 28, at Grace Lutheran Church in Des Moines.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Grace Lutheran Church or St. Luke's Unity Point Hospice in Cedar Rapids.
