Coe College instructor will be missed

In response to the Aug. 5 article titled “Instructor recalled as affectionate, generous” by Diane Heldt:
Sadly, I missed the initial December article in The Gazette about Mark Elliott's condition and his Build-A-Bear project.
Several years ago, I met Mark on the Coe College campus. At the time, I was a new librarian and frequented the faculty/staff lunch spot in what was then called The Pub. It was here where I was introduced to Mark and was immediately impressed by his gracious manners and keen sense of humor.
He, along with other music department members, Jerry Owen, Rich Adkins and Rich Hoffman, always offered a welcoming and festive place at their table. My presence lowered the base on the collective knowledge of music but this collegial group found the right pitch for all of us to tune into the conversation.
I consider it my good fortune to have met Mark. This announcement of his death sent a rush of pain through my body. The thought of his suffering and leaving this world was a severe blow. His smile in the published photo helped ease this pain and sense of loss.
Mark was a wonderful man of the best character and moral nature. My deepest sympathies to his wife, family and the Coe College community.
