Angie Lantz wins 300th match in St. Albert's state quarterfinal sweep

Nov. 9, 2016 6:22 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS — This time, just getting here wasn't enough.
"The goal, this year, was to come and stay and play a while," Angie Lantz said.
Seventh-ranked Council Bluffs St. Albert made Lantz a winner for the 300th time, sweeping No. 6 Central Lyon, 25-21, 25-18, 25-20, in a Class 2A quarterfinal at the state volleyball tournament Wednesday afternoon at the U.S. Cellular Center.
Sydney McLaren collected 20 kills as the Saintes (27-4) advanced to Thursday's semifinal against top-rated, defending-champion Western Christian (39-6). First serve is 4 p.m.
St. Albert drew the Wolfpack in the first round last year and made a quick exit.
'I think we match up with them a little better,' McLaren said. 'They're still towering over us. But we're scrappy, and I think we can give them a run for their money.'
A Class 1A semifinalist last year, Central Lyon (30-5) held a 16-15 lead in Game 2, and a 17-16 advantage in Game 3.
Both times, the Saintes pulled ahead and ran away.
It was a 10-2 surge to close the second set. In the third, Teagan Blackburn had back-to-back kills to ignite a seven-point run.
Lantz has been at St. Albert 13 years. She owns a 300-160 record and has brought five teams to state.
Lexie Petry dished our 40 assists for the Saintes. Teagan Blackburn added nine kills.
