Fund program for safe routes

School is getting ready to start and too many of Iowa's students will be dropped off and picked up by their parents. Why? Because the students don't have a safe route to school. Whether it is the lack of the sidewalk, busy intersections or other physical obstacles, parents will not allow their children to walk or ride their bikes to school if they believe their children are in danger.
Currently, there are federal funds that can help fix the obstacles, but it isn't enough. The program 'Safe Routes to School” has more requests for funding than funding available. It doesn't have to be that way. By designating state funds for a 'Safe Routes to School” program, more children will have the opportunity to walk or bike to and from school. Not only will they gain independence, but they will realize an active, healthy habit.
