Schmidt, Larry
Larry Schmidt, 62, passed away Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial, with military honors by VFW Post 788, will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include his daughter, Kari Brisel of Marion; three grandchildren; brother, Robert Schmidt of Brewton, Ala.; sister, Phyllis Iturrino of Fairhope, Ala.; nieces, LuAnn Iturrino and Elaine (Dallas) Garcia of Fairhope, Ala.; special friend, Joyce Barnd of Cedar Rapids; and his beloved dog, Heidi.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Viola Schmidt; and a brother, Paul Schmidt.
Larry was born Feb. 6, 1950, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Harold and Viola (Mildenstein) Schmidt. Larry was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He most recently worked for Delta Air Lines as a customer service agent.
Larry was a member of Cedar Rapids VFW Post 788, where he held several offices, including commander twice; member of the Cedar Rapids Moose Lodge, Marion American Legion, and elite color guard of VFW Post 788.
Larry enjoyed playing music for people, trips to the casino, and spending time with his family and friends.
The family would like to express a special thank you to Joyce Barnd for her excellent care and love to Larry over the years. Additional thank you to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Cancer Center staff, Dr. Carter and Dr. Silverman, for their compassionate care of Larry over the last six years. Also thank you to all of the Iowa Hospice caregivers.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be directed to Cedar Rapids VFW Post 788, 3240 Southgate Pl. SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404.
