Schmidt, Alice Marie
Alice Marie Schmidt, 76, of Manchester, died at the Good Neighbor Home on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012.
She was born Feb. 29, 1936, in Marion, the daughter of Carl and Dorothy (Soukup) Michels. Alice was raised and educated in Linn County. On Feb. 29, 1964, Alice was united in marriage to Gordon Schmidt at First Lutheran Church. Together they resided in Manchester. Alice had made her home at the Good Neighbor Home since 2010.
Alice was a long time member of First Lutheran Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She and Gordon traveled extensively throughout the United States, making it to all 50 states. They also traveled to Europe. Alice was an excellent cook, and was known for her potato salad, homemade bread and chocolate desserts. She was a day care provider for over 30 years and loved and cherished each as if they were her own. Most of all, Alice had a great faith in Christ and loved her family above all else.
Survivors include her husband, Gordon Schmidt of Manchester; one son, Gary (Andrea) Schmidt of Manchester; two daughters, Paula (Don) Krogmann of Center Point and Laura (Bill)) Thomas of Manchester; nine grandchildren, Jacob Thomas, Lucas (fiancee, Jessica Quint) Thomas, Megan Thomas, Benjamin Krogmann, Jonathan Krogmann, Hannah Schmidt, Grant Schmidt, Mark (Christina) Schmidt and Christina (Heath) Landt; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Leona Jones of Cedar Rapids, Delores (Ray) Grulkey of Hiawatha, Carol (Don) Eiben of Anamosa and Judy LeDuc of California; and sisters-in-law, Mary Michels of Central City and Marvelyn (Rick) Davis of California.
Alice was preceded in death by a son, Duane Schmidt in July 2012; a daughter, Karla Schmidt at birth; her parents; one brother, Richard Michels; a grandson, Paul Schmidt; a granddaughter, Olivia Schmidt; and brothers-in-law, Eldon Schmidt, David Schmidt and Eddie Jones.
Leonard-Muller Funeral Home and Crematory in Manchester is in charge of arrangements.

Funeral Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at First Lutheran Church in Manchester with the Rev. Dr. Jean Rabary and the Rev. Allan Oman officiating. Interment: Oakland Cemetery in Manchester. Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.
