Nixon, Phyllis J.
Phyllis J. Nixon, 88, of 100 Thompson Dr. SE, passed away at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha on Jan. 6, 2013. Services will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 10:30 a.m., with a visitation an hour before, officiated by the Rev. Harlan Gillespie and the Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer. Entombment will be at Cedar Memorial Park Mausoleum. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Phyllis was born Oct. 6, 1924, in New Sharon, Iowa, to Harry and Verah Jarard. She graduated from New Sharon High School as salutatorian in 1941 and moved to Cedar Rapids to work in the office of Wilson & Co. until she married Jerome R. Nixon on June 14, 1946.
In 1962, she returned to work helping her husband at the Armstrong Parking Ramp until 1971. She was employed by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. until her retirement in 1987. Phyllis became executive secretary for three insurance associations for many years and participated on national panels.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years; a daughter, Barbara Green of Cedar Rapids; a son, Robert (Lynn) of Stanchfield, Minn.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was a member of various insurance associations, the El Kahir Shrine Ladies Auxiliary, St. Paul's United Methodist Church, several bridge clubs, and especially enjoyed her GNO Friends.
She was a devoted wife and mother, loved her children and grandchildren, and was a friend to everyone who crossed her path.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the El Kahir Shrine Transportation Fund or St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
