Police have accused a Cedar Rapids man of abuse that caused broken bones to his infant daughter.
Timothy S. A. Holderfield, 25, of 203 Morgan St. SW, has been charged with child endangerment after a six-week investigation. He is accused of abusing his 46-day-old daughter on three different occasions, causing her to suffer a broken clavicle, broken ribs and bruising to the chest and face, police said.
Police first learned of the injuries on Jan. 21 when they were called to St. Luke's Hospital. Holderfield had brought his daughter to the emergency room, and claimed he heard a “popping” sound while he was burping her, according court documents.
“Further examination revealed the child had rib fractures and other older healing fractures that were indicative of physical abuse,” the criminal complaint against Holderfield said. “The defendant had exclusive supervision of the child when the injuries were inflicted.”
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said investigators believe the abuse happened inside Holderfield's mobile home. After a warrant was issued for his arrest, Holderfield was taken into custody Thursday without incident, police said. He was taken to the Linn County Jail.
Reached at his home Tuesday, Holderfield declined to comment on the matter.
Hamblin said the young girl is recovering from her injuries, but was uncertain who currently had custody of her. She said the Iowa Department of Human Services was involved in the investigation.
