Samuel "Sam" McCoy Auld, 89, a longtime Iowa resident, passed away suddenly on Monday, June 5, 2017.
A memorial service will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 9, at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello.
Sam was born in Mercer, Pa., on Dec. 26, 1927, the son of Mary (McCoy) and John Auld. After graduating from Emerson High School in Gary, Ind., he enlisted in the Army, where he spent two years as a paratrooper. Following the Army, he attended Purdue University and went on to many jobs in industrial engineering and plant management in Pennsylvania and Dubuque and Monticello, Iowa. He also was a long time H&R Block tax professional and accounting manager at the Monticello Golf Club.
Sam met his bride, Helene, doing one of the things he loved most, dancing. He was an Arthur Murray ballroom dance instructor and she was his student. They married in 1953 in Crown Point, Ind., and spent the next 63 years together raising five children and of course, dancing. He was a long time member of the Congenial 100 dance club and attended weekly dance events up until the time of his death. He was an avid fan of many sports (baseball, football, golf) and loved to travel. He and Helene went on annual cruises and spent their summers by "Nana and Papa's" pool.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Helene (nee Bildz); four sons, David M. Auld of Des Moines, Stuart T. Auld of Dubuque, Phillip J. Auld of Anamosa and Adam B. (DeAnne) Auld of Greensboro, N.C.; one daughter, Samantha R. (Tim) Towlerton of Robins; grandchildren, Danielle Auld, Jonathan Auld, Samuel Auld, Amy Auld, Evan Towlerton and Mitchell Towlerton; and brother, John Auld of Fort Wayne, Ind.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Jane Luke and Eleanor Stuart; and one grandson, Alex Auld.
