Flander, James F.
James F. Flander, 82, of Washington, formerly of Keota, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at Halcyon House in Washington.
Jim was born June 28, 1930, in Washington, Iowa, to Frank and Margaret (Singmaster) Flander. He graduated from Keota High School and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. On Sept. 8, 1951, Jim married Isabelle Conrad in Cedar Rapids. The couple lived and farmed in the Keota area until moving to Washington in July 2009.
Jim was a member of Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, VFW, American Legion, Elks Lodge and the state and national Landing Ship Tank Association, where he served as state secretary/treasurer. He also served on the Keota Community school board for three years and St. Mary's Cemetery board for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Isabelle of Washington; three sons, Murray J. (Jane) Flander of Keota, Gary A. (Maureen) Flander of Denver, Colo., and Randy C. (Cindy) Flander of Keota; daughter, Melinda K. (Tim) Holden of Manly; eight grandchildren; and sister, JoEllen Cruse of Fresno, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Thomas Flander; and daughter, Victoria Ann Flander.
Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, with the Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries-St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 until 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a wake service at 6 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Halcyon House in Washington at a later date.
A memorial fund has been established for Holy Trinity Cemeteries or the Halcyon House Good Samaritan Fund.
