LARRY ALBERT LONG
Cedar Rapids
Larry Albert Long, 68, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Friday, Dec. 28, 2018, from lung cancer.
Per Larry's wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral.
Larry was born on April 20, 1950, the son of Carlos and Dorothy (Coots) Long. Larry graduated from Washington High School in 1968 and earned an E.E. degree at Kirkwood College.
After graduation, Larry sold his Harley to finance his move to Chicago, for a job with Western Electric.
Larry returned to Cedar Rapids where he worked for Norand Corp. (Intermec) from 1975 to 2001.
Larry was featured in a Cedar Rapids Gazette article "Shutterbug" by Bob Hilton on July 15, 2000. He was proud of giving away over 20,000 photos to student-athletes. He refused to accept payment. The Independence softball team (Gene & Debbie Ehlers) sneaked some money into a card. He never spent it and has instructed it be returned…yep that's the kind of person he was: funny, kind, generous and stubborn.
Besides photography, his many interests included: gardening, cruising in his bright yellow Corvette, collecting and restoring jukeboxes, Monarchs of Eastern Iowa, Indian Creek Nature Center and a never-ending hunt for vintage treasures at local sales and thrift stores. He enjoyed attending local festivals and fairs.
Larry is survived by his sisters, Carmen (Everett) Schacht of Cresco, and Corrine Kos of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law, Alma Long of Cedar Rapids; and the following niece and nephews, Gregory and Brian Long, Neil Schacht, Tom Altman and Mike and Gayle Kos.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Carlene Altman; and brother, Jerry Long.
Larry was a good son, brother and uncle and a friend to many. He was sorry his illness kept him from attending his 50th class reunion-Washington Class of 1968 (go Warriors). Larry kept his humor even during his illness. This is evident with the final line he chose for his grave marker, which reads, "Cremation-the ultimate cure for what ails you."
Memorials may be made to Indian Creek Nature Center or a charity of your choice.
Our family would like to thank the staff at Hallmar Care Center at Mercy Medical Center for the special care they provided to Larry.
Please share a memory of Larry at www.cedarmemorial.com under obituaries.
