Too early to predict March Madness? Not quite
Oct. 11, 2013 5:14 am
College football season is in full swing and commands the national spotlight here in early October as it should.
But this year college basketball shares a little more time with its autumn-based brother. Hoops practice began in September, and coaches have six weeks to fit in 30 preseason practices, not the usual 30 days. There are plenty of reasons why these changes took place, but we won't get into all of that right now.
Looking ahead, we have the NCAA tournament custom-made for Midwestern basketball fans, especially if they're a top-four seed. Often that will get you a game closer to home. Plus, two of the four regional sites (Indianapolis, Memphis) are within a day's drive for most Big Ten/Big 12 fans.
If Iowa can squeeze into a No. 4 seed, the Hawkeyes have a chance at landing in St. Louis or Milwaukee. Given that most of their top-shelf Big Ten foes are located east of Iowa, it seems St. Louis is more realistic. Not a bad four-hour drive, if that's how it works out. Iowa State also looks like a strong candidate for an at-large spot this year, too.
The tournament does have a few changes this year. The principles around seeding have changed to allow conference foes to square off in earlier rounds. Also, all the conference movement makes for some interesting potential match-ups.
So here's a way, way too early look at an NCAA tournament bracket for next March:
