Malachi R. "Mick" Cashen, 70, of Rowley, died Monday, June 26, 2017, at his home near Rowley.
Mick was born Nov. 3, 1946, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Ralph H. and Nettie E. (Prindle) Cashen. He was a 1964 graduate of Independence High School and served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, until his discharge in 1966. He returned to the Independence area and married Linda K. Stacey on Aug. 10, 1967, in Jesup, Iowa. He was employed with John Deere Co. in Waterloo before moving to Poplar Bluff, Mo., where he constructed Butler Buildings for three years prior to returning to Independence. In June 1984, he became employed with the Mental Health Institute in Independence as first groundskeeper and a master plumber for 29 years until his retirement in 2009.
Mick loved spending time with his family fishing, camping and woodworking. He even built his own home, where they currently live. He was a member of the Buchanan County Wildlife Association and the Masonic Lodge.
Mick is survived by his wife of 49 years, Linda K. Cashen, Rowley; two daughters, Brenda Lee Cashen, Independence, and Lora Lee (Chris) Cashen Baker, Stanwood; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, John Cashen, Independence; and a sister, Marilyn A. Summers, Independence.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Louise Linsley.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, with the Rev. Kevin Jennings officiating. Burial will be held in the Wilson Cemetery, Independence, with full military honors. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where a Masonic memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
