Senior defensive tackle Carl Davis
talks about the expectations that the D-line has embraced this season.
At :43, Davis said, yes, a few of Iowa's defenders are checking out tape this summer on opponents. 'We want to be able to anticipate plays and make big plays.”
Great answers at 2:05, talking about the Carl Davis from 2013 to the ‘14 version. 'It's not just worrying about myself now, it's keeping everyone motivated. I plan on contending for a championship.”
3:03 -- Davis' uncle is former Iowa hoops assistant Rich Walker. I asked what role his uncle played in him coming to Iowa City.
3:35 -- Iowa DT is perhaps the healthiest depth chart on the team, Lots of experience, talent and some young potential.
4:19 -- There was an Instagram video of the defensive tackles going for long routes and playing WR and CB. Davis' answer about being a big guy doing little guy things is terrific at 4:50. He references his hoops days as a Detroit prep and how he was a 'point-center.”
Offensive tackle Brandon Scherff also talks about big guys doing 'little guy” things. Last August, the 6-5, 320-pounder took a turn fielding punts. He went 3-for-3 in catching them. Scherff ratted on Davis, saying he went 0-for-3. 'That worked out perfectly.”
We've talked a bunch about the defense and its summer video study. The offense does that, too. Scherff talks about how much at :57.
At 1:20, Scherff talks about the importance of helping along young O-linemen. He said he learned a lot from former Iowa OLs Markus Zusevics, Riley Reiff and Matt Tobin.
2:15 -- How long do players get a chance to leave Iowa City in the summer?
Pretty great overall breakdown of the 2014 Iowa tight ends.
Senior Ray Hamilton sees nice complements between himself and Henry Krieger-Coble and Jake Duzey and George Kittle. The first two are more of your in-line type TEs, players who can be counted on to block. The later two are more 'move” TEs.
Hamilton talks about production at 2:05. At 2:23, he talks about the three-TE sets that worked so well at Ohio State. 'Believe me, we love that three-TE set.”
One point that Hamilton makes in the second part of this interview: If you play TE at Iowa, blocking is very much part of the deal.
'I don't think they ever will,” Hamilton said when asked if a TE has ever squeezed through Iowa without having to block, 'not as long as the head man is here. I think that's part of the reason we do well at the next level, too. They teach us the fundamentals of blocking.”
