Edward Porter Ackerman, 89, of Marion, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha.

Edward was born Dec 4, 1920, to Royal Valentine and Hattie Mabel (Geisz) Ackerman, near Grant, Iowa. He attended Grant School and graduated from Griswold High School. On April 12, 1942, he was married to Edna Luella Nelson at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church. They had two sons, Steven Ray and Kenneth Lyle. Edward served in the Navy during World War II and was employed at Joyce Lumber Co., Voss Manufacturing, and as a rural mail carrier. Edward was a resident of Atlantic, Iowa, until moving to Marion, Iowa, in 2007.

Edward is survived by son, Steve and wife Joan; two grandchildren, Julia Ackerman, and Anthony Ackerman and wife Cindy; three great-grandchildren, Miranda and Shawn Vollmer and Tyler Ackerman, all of Marion, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Kenneth; brothers, Floyd, Clarence and Harold; sisters, Mabel Hill and Velma Johnson; and granddaughter-in-law, Becky Ackerman.

His funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Graveside service will follow at the Atlantic Cemetery. Pastor Dennis Meyer will officiate. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 6 to 8 tonight.
