GORDON HARTZELL
Cedar Rapids
Gordon L. Hartzell, 96, of Plano, Texas, formerly of Cedar Rapids and Marshalltown, passed away Friday, Dec. 12, 2014, at his home at Prestonwood Court Assisted Living in Plano, Texas. Services will be held at a later date including a gathering at Prestonwood Court, memorial service in Cedar Rapids and graveside services in Marshalltown.
Gordon was born June 14, 1918, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Harry and Bertha (Rush) Hartzell. He was educated in Mitchellville, Iowa, graduating from Mitchellville High School where he was very active in high school sports. He was united in marriage to Madelon Jacobson on Feb. 22, 1944, and to Marie Oaks on March 8, 1969, both of whom preceded him in death.
Gordon honorably served our country in the Army Air Corps during World War II and had
the opportunity of a lifetime to travel to Washington, D.C., as
part of the Honor Flight acknowledging those who served during World
War II.
Gordon spent many years as a barber with the majority of time working at Canfield's Barber Shop in Marshalltown. He then worked for the City of Marshalltown's Water Department until his retirement. After retirement, he moved to Mountain Home, Ark., and subsequently Cedar Rapids. He moved to Plano, Texas, in 2012 to be close to his daughter and her family.
Gordon loved spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed trips to the casinos in Iowa, attending dances in Walford and the many visits with friends in Cedar Rapids at their weekly breakfast outings and the gatherings for morning and afternoon coffee and fellowship. He was a huge fan of Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball. While living in Texas, attending Hawkeye football watch parties with his daughter and son-in-law was something he looked forward to every Saturday during the fall.
Those left to cherish Gordon's memory are his daughter and son-in-law, Jan and John Finley of Plano, Texas; grandson, Don Finley of Allen, Texas; former granddaughter-in-law and her husband, Stacey and John Thomas of McKinney, Texas; great-grandchildren, Tabitha Finley and Johnathan Finley, both of McKinney, Texas; and great-great-grandson, Kayson Gilbertson of McKinney, Texas; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Gordon in death were his parents, his two wives, an infant daughter at birth, two brothers and a sister.
Gordon's family would like to thank the staff of Prestonwood Court Assisted Living and Silverado Hospice for the compassion and care given to Gordon as well as our entire family.
