Jacqueline Louise Shellady Benson died Nov. 9, 2016. Private family services will take place.
She was born in Iowa City on March 7, 1927, the only child of Louise (Hoover) Shellady and Cloyde Shellady. Jackie attended Iowa City schools, graduating from City High in 1944. She graduated (1948) from the University of Iowa, majoring in Spanish. Jackie was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. At the university, she met Robert Wayne Benson of Burlington, Iowa. They married Sept. 6, 1947, at First United Methodist Church of Iowa City. After Bob's graduation in 1949, they moved to Burlington.
Jacqueline loved fashion, organizing and entertaining in her home, going to parties, cooking, political discussion, bridge and mah jongg. She was involved in community activities and charity functions and was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church.
One of Jackie's passions was golf. She was a member of the women's golf league at the Burlington Golf Club and was an A flight player. She was a significant influence in passing this on to her grandchildren.
Jackie and Bob were avid Hawkeye football and basketball fans and held season tickets for decades, attending with friends and family. They spent nearly 50 years wintering in southwest Florida, where Jackie loved the beach, sun and golf. She especially loved when her grandchildren made annual visits.
In 2000, Jackie and Bob moved back to Iowa City and re-joined the Methodist Church. On Sept. 6, 2016, they celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. Additionally, Jackie was a member of Entre Nous.
She is survived by her husband, Bob; her son, Robert S. Benson; her daughter, Julie Benson (C. Peter) Hayek; four grandchildren, Benjamin P. Hayek (Jaclyn), Robert W. Benson, David J. Hayek (Sarah) and Molly E. Benson Herrick (Joseph); six great-grandchildren, Ava Herrick, Anna Hayek, Jack Herrick, Elsie Hayek, Will Hayek and Walker Hayek; two nieces, Barbara Benson Howell and Susan Benson Todd; and one nephew, John P. Benson.
