Shannon, Nancy Joyce Smith
Nancy Joyce Smith Shannon started her Journey 84 years ago in Abertillery, Wales on March 2, 1925. She met the love of her life, Harvey, in London, where he was stationed in World War II. They were married Sept. 18, 1946, in Iowa and had a baby boy, Larry Harvey, who died hours after being born. They relocated to Waterloo in 1950. Nancy retired from Rath Packing as did her beloved Harvey.
For nearly the past four years, she resided among the care of the wonderful people at Cedar Falls Health Care Center, whose lives she touched with her beautiful smile and lovely blue eyes. Although communication became difficult for her, she was able to share her love in many different ways, right until the very end of her stay on earth on Jan. 6, 2010, at 6:38 a.m. She was met in Heaven by her parents; her siblings; her infant son, Larry; and her soul mate Harvey. Their joy at being with her again is as big as our sorrow of losing her.
Those left to carry on without her are her children, daughter, Joyce (and special friend, Dennis) and son, David; granddaughter, Heather (Kevin) Smith, and their children, Bronwyn, 18, Lauren and Elizabeth, 9, and Benjamin, 4; granddaughter, Annette (Scot) Pownell, and their children, Spenser, 4, and Aiden 3 months; grandson, Bryan (Kristi) Shannon, and their child, Sara, 4; a nephew, Anthony Smith of England, and his children, Ester, Gregory and Giles. She also leaves behind many friends and acquaintances.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Linden United Methodist Church, Waterloo, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street in Waterloo and one hour before services Monday at the church.
Donations may be made in her name to the Caregivers Association at Cedar Falls Health Care Center, 1728 West Eighth St., Cedar Falls, IA 50613, for the enrichment of the residents there.
