Smith, Bernadine V.
Bernadine V. Smith, 79, of Reno, Nev., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, June 17, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born April 23, 1931, in Richland County, Wisconsin, to Vaughn and Agnes Leatherberry (Marcklely), she married Maurice D. Smith on Oct. 10, 1949.
Bernadine devoted her life to raising her 12 children. She loved animals and nature, gardening, cooking, reading, listening to music, spending time with her family, and enjoyed fishing in her early years.
Survivors include sons, Steven of Cedar Rapids, and Richard (Beth) of Lisbon; daughters, Julie Reynolds (Joe) and Christine Novicio, all of Reno, Nev., and Bonnie Cleveland (Greg) of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, April, Rick, David, Laurie, Amber, Shelly, Bonnie Jo, Michael, Kayla and Jordon; along with eight great-grandchildren.
Bernadine was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Ronald; husband, Maurice; sons, Maurice LaVern, Kevin, Brian, Kerry and Kelly; and daughter, Linda.
She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Shawn; and grandson, Barton.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Papich-Kuba Janeba Chapel West, 1604 J St. SW, Cedar Rapids. Friends my call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the chapel.
