Prospect Meadows is wise investment

Two months ago, the City of Cedar Rapids experienced a major disappointment when the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission turned down the application to build a casino here.
The investors were disappointed, as were the business people who lost the opportunity for increased traffic. Linn County citizens also lost the opportunity for the economic boost provided by visitors and the taxes they would pay.
In my experience, Iowans do not let disappointment keep them from effectively taking care of business. It's time to seek out and support other activities and investments that will contribute to the long-term viability of our community.
Prospect Meadows is such a project.
The Iowa RISE Grant has committed $1.3 million to Prospect Meadows. Now it is up to the local communities that benefit to do the same.
According to the National Association of Sports Commissions, a fully developed Prospect Meadows Ball Fields will yield $25 million a year in estimated direct visitor spending.
If the casino would have been a grand-slam home run at $81 million per year, then Prospect Meadows certainly would be a single at $25 million.
The casino was estimated to generate 1,060,000 annual visitors. In addition to enhancing play for local kids, Prospect Meadows anticipates it will bring 120,000 unique visitors to our area each year, many spending several days in the area.
While the disappointment over the casino lingers, it's time for our community to pick ourselves up in the traditional Iowa way and get on with business.
