Dr. Carl E. Betts, 89,
passed away Saturday,
March 25, 2017, under the compassionate care of Iowa City Hospice at The Bird House Hospice Home of Johnson County.
A gathering time for
family and friends will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 21, at The Kirkwood Room (next to Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City). Memories will be shared at 6 p.m.
Memorials may be made to The Bird House at www.hospicehomejc.org or to Wendell Johnson Speech Pathology Department at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, c/o of the UI Foundation, or the charity of your choice.
Carl was employed as director of Speech and Hearing Services for Crippled Children (SSCC). In the late '70s, he also became director of Speech and Hearing Services at the Hospital School. Later, he also became an associate professor in the department of pediatrics.
Carl retired in 1989 to continue to enjoy his other passions in life, which were hunting, fishing, gardening and family.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jo Ann, of 66 years; sons, Mikel (Vicki) Betts of Iowa City, Scott (Alice) Betts of Grand Junction, Colo., and Kirk Betts of North Liberty; grandchildren, Jameson of Iowa City and Andy and Joel of Grand Junction; his great-grandchildren, Lilly, Bradley, Gabriella and Ivy, all from Grand Junction; and a sister, Phyllis Thompson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and son, Gary Betts (Pamela).
Our family would like to thank the staff of Iowa City Hospice and The Bird House for the wonderful care given to Carl.
