Pair of Kernels win MWL weekly awards
Trey Vavra and Stephen Gonsalves of the Cedar Rapids Kernels have been named Midwest League Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday.
First baseman Vavra hit .409 in six games last week, including two doubles, a triple, a home run and seven RBIs. He also posted a .458 slugging percentage and .727 OPS (on base plus slugging).
Gonsalves made one start last week, throwing seven one-hit shutout innings at Wisconsin. He struck out 11.
The Kernels (11-7) play three games at Quad Cities, beginning Tuesday afternoon, before returning home to host Clinton for three games, beginning Friday.
