This is why Penn State hates Iowa
Sep. 21, 2009 2:41 pm
From the Altoona (Pa.) Mirror:
UNIVERSITY PARK - One kick and one brick left Penn State feeling sick, leading to two of the more significant losses in Nittany Lion history.
They occurred just four months apart and were courtesy of the same opponent - Iowa.
That makes this week's football game all about revenge.

I covered both games, and they both were amazing from Iowa's perspective. In football, Iowa was the Big Ten's most physical team and if the Hawkeyes could stay close, they had a chance to upset Penn State, which they did 24-23. Of course the national title talk subsided for Penn State once USC whacked the Nittany Lions 38-24 in the Rose Bowl.
The basketball game was unusual only because of former Iowa guard Jake Kelly's health. Kelly had a fever that kept him from practicing the day before. Iowa called a timeout shortly after halftime just so he could leave the court and vomit. He rebounded to score 22 points and grab 11 rebounds while defending one of the Big Ten's best guards in Talor Battle. The ultimately kept Penn State from the NCAA Tournament, which I felt was a disgrace. I thought the Nittany Lions were at least the Big Ten's third-best team all season, behind Michigan State and Purdue.
Iowa deserves all the hatred from Happy Valley this week because of what happened last year. But revenge talk leads teams to discussions about getting even, not ahead. Once the emotion subsides, what then?
Kelly was one of four Iowa players with eligibility remaining to leave the program last March. Here's video of that press conference. Kelly has applied for an NCAA hardship to play right away at Indiana State, and he should know sometime this month about his case.
Iowa place kicker Daniel Murray (1) kicks a 31-yard field goal to give Iowa the a one-point lead over Penn State in the closing seconds quarter of their game Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008 at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. Iowa won 24-23. (Brian Ray/The Gazette)
