Heiden, Rettig offer good governance

While I do respect Phil Hemingway's tenacity and dedication, I support both Janelle Rettig and Pat Heiden for Johnson County supervisor on Nov. 6. I specifically want to explain why I am supporting Pat.
Criticism has been leveled that Pat hasn't always been a Democrat, and Janelle used to work for Republican U.S. Rep. Jim Leach. I didn't join the Democratic Party until 2000. Bill Bradley, endorsed by Paul Wellstone, inspired me to caucus and attend the county and district Democratic conventions. I then worked to elect Al Gore in a very difficult year for Democrats.
Before 2000, and since, I have been an activist for many progressive issues. Candidates I support, in any given primary, don't often make it to the general election. I have long understood that above ideology, good governance is needed, and I support expressing solidarity as a Democrat.
I believe Pat will provide an evenhandedness and will treat issues with fairness and intelligence. I respect her for leaving a party that no longer represents her values.
I support robust and passionate primaries. After the primary, as Democrats, we unite. We are a Big Tent party, we don't agree on everything; we do share fundamental values. Those who are brave enough to put themselves up for public office and win primaries deserve our support.
I encourage Johnson County Democrats to support Rettig and Heiden for supervisor.
