Was there a way to save catfish?

A friend and I went fishing on Coralville Lake on April 12. Although it was a very nice day and we caught several nice catfish, we saw a very sad sight: hundreds of huge flathead catfish dead along the banks.
We saw some more than 60 pounds, and there were too many to count in the 20- to 40-pound range. If you are a fisherman, or care about our fish, I urge you to write the Department of Natural Resources or Army Corp to ask if this could have been avoided.
It takes more than 20 years for a fish to reach 60 pounds, and this will take several years to recover the population in the lake.
I wonder if a few holes in the ice would have saved these fish. Can we get some answers?
