Dennis Dean Carlson, 70, of Atkins, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at the Community United Methodist Church in Ogden. Burial: Glenwood Cemetery, Ogden, with military services by Boone Veteran Council. Friends may visit with the family in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Teahen Funeral Home, and in Ogden on Thursday after 10 a.m. at the church.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Kathy; two sons, Keith (Tammy) Carlson of Belle Plaine and Kelly Carlson of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Kimberly Carlson of Atkins; a sister, Barbara (Albert) Miller of Boone; four grandchildren, Keyran, Camarie (Jake) Bauer, Meshawn and Walker; and two great-grandchildren, Jade and Kadie.
His parents; and a sister and her husband, Janice (Richard) Lindeman, precede him in death.
Dennis was born April 30, 1945, in Boone County, the son of Morris and Laura Morgan Carlson. He graduated from Ogden High School in 1964 and married Kathleen Stoneburner on March 23, 1972, in Ogden. He retired in 2008 after 35 years with IES Industries and Alliant Energy and had worked for many years at the Prairie Creek Generating Station. Dennis was a Navy veteran of Vietnam.
Dennis enjoyed camping, woodworking, playing cards, roller skating and watching the Hawkeyes. He and his family are well known for their extensive Christmas light display at their home that has become a holiday tradition for more than 30 years.
