Letter: Thrilled with the fireworks ban

I am thrilled with the decision of the Cedar Rapids City Council to ban the use of fireworks within city limits. I hope that the Marion City Council follows suit. I see all these people upset about the ban and it blows my mind. Are they really surprised by it? First of all, you never had the 'right” to shoot off fireworks. You had a privilege. Just like children, if you abuse the privilege then you lose it. Just like children, you are throwing a tantrum when you lose this privilege. It was clear throughout this ordeal that there is a group of people in the community who do not care about their neighbors.
I see people saying they have to deal with barking dogs and revving motors and noisy neighbors and everything else and I wonder why they didn't do exactly what those of us upset with the abuse of fireworks did. If it's a noise ordinance disturbance then call the police. The city had said that there was never a response to an issue as elevated as this was, the use of fireworks.
To those upset with the City Council for banning the use, it's time to grow up and think about other people for once. Thank you, CRCC for putting the right of people to live in peace and quiet in front of the desires of inconsiderate people. Bravo!
