Letter: Tax plan should not burden struggling families

Ron Corbett, as governor, would push to slash Iowa's taxes from over 8 percent to a flat 3 percent while increasing the sales tax, a portion of which would go toward improvements to Iowa's water quality and outdoor recreation.
While I applaud interest in spending toward those ends, this is a very regressive tax proposal and while it may be somewhat attractive to the wealthy and businesses, the increased sales tax would put more burden on people in the state with lower incomes. He also would remove most deductions for those making over $10,000. I don't disagree with removing many deductions, but move the limit to $50,000 or higher. If he wants to be attractive to all Iowans and not just the wealthy, he needs to come up with a tax plan that will not add to the burden of families in Iowa who are struggling.
