Despite loss, Xavier stays at No. 2 in 3A

Opening-week losses to Cedar Rapids Xavier and Iowa City Regina caused them minimal damage in the Gazette/KCRG/KGYM state football rankings, released Monday.

Xavier, which suffered a 24-2 defeat to Class 4A top-ranked West Des Moines Dowling, stayed at No. 2 in this week's Class 3A rankings.

Regina dropped a 29-28 overtime decision to Solon on Friday, ending its state-best 56-game winning streak. The Regals slipped from No. 1 to a second-place tie in Class 1A.

Fort Dodge St. Edmond vaulted to No. 1 in 1A after defeating Algona Garrigan, 14-7, Friday.

Pella is the new top-rated team in 3A, vaulting all the way up from No. 4 after whipping Washington (Iowa), 35-0. The top three teams (Sioux City Heelan, Xavier and Davenport Assumption) all were beaten by 4A competition.

The other four No. 1 teams are the same. Dowling remains on top in 4A, New Hampton in 2A, Maquoketa Valley in Class A and Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton in Eight Man.

Dowling is followed by Waukee, Bettendorf and Cedar Rapids Washington in 4A. Dowling hosts Waukee on Sept. 12.

Solon moved up four spots to No. 3 in 3A following the triumph over Regina. West Delaware is fourth.

North Fayette Valley is second behind New Hampton in 2A. The TigerHawks blanked perennial 3A power Decorah, 14-0.

South Winneshiek is tied with Regina for the No. 2 spot in 1A after taking down last year's 2A runner-up, Waukon, 34-12.
