Cedar Rapids Washington struggles offensively in loss to Bettendorf

Dec. 2, 2011 9:27 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS - No Oglesby, no Washpun. Not exactly no problem for Cedar Rapids Washington.
Make that big problem. Scoring was an issue for the Warriors in their season opener Friday night against Bettendorf, as they were held to six first-half points in a 49-29 loss.
You wondered exactly how Washington would be able to replace a pair of D-I college players in Josh Oglesby (Iowa) and Wes Washpun (Tennessee) from last season's state tournament unit. You're still wondering.
“It's a difficult task losing those two,” said Wash center Sean Bredl, limited to a quarter because of an ankle injury. “We've got a young team. We've got to come together and hopefully get better.”
Bredl is Washington's leading returning scorer, but that's only 4.9 points per game. The Warriors' five starters Friday night averaged a shade over 11 points combined in 2010-11.
In other words, this is going to take some time. Bettendorf didn't exactly play a flawless game but was able to put the ball in the basket with at least some regularity.
The Bulldogs led after a quarter, 8-4, and at halftime, 20-6.
“Good defense is exactly what we strive for,” said Bett forward Tom Dunlavy, who had a game-high 10 points and nine boards. “Last year, we didn't play very good defense, to say the least. Coach preached that to us all summer.”
“If we can play good defense, let our offense come around eventually, we may hang around in some games and get a little better as time goes on,” said Washington Coach Brad Metzger.
Washington shot just 26 percent from the floor, committed 19 turnovers and was out-rebounded, 37-23. Jason Oney led the Warriors with five points.
If you're looking for a bright spot, sophomore point guard Montaves Anderson had his moments, not looking overwhelmed by any stretch. He scored four points off the bench and had a team-high four rebounds.
“We just need to keep plugging away with people,” Metzger said. “Give them some time on the floor to get comfortable. There's a lot going on in their minds.”
