MICHAEL J. TWOMEY
Manchester
Michael J. Twomey, 68, of Manchester, passed away at his home in Manchester on Monday, April 17, 2017.
He was born Feb. 13, 1949, in Winona, Minn., the son of Patrick and Betty (Frankosky) Twomey. He was raised and educated in the area and graduated from Cotter High School in 1967. Mike then attended and graduated from St. Mary's College in Winona in 1971. In 1974, Mike completed the Mayo Foundation Physical Therapy program.
On July 3, 1971, Mike was united in marriage to Mary Boland in Winona. Three children were born to this union. The family lived in Cedar Rapids and then moved to Manchester. They later divorced. On Jan. 24, 1998, Mike was united in marriage to Mary Recker at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
Mike worked at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids as a physical therapist. In 1984, he opened his own physical therapy practice at the Iowa Medical Clinic in Cedar Rapids. He was the director of the PT department at Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Manchester, from 1987 to 1994. In 1994, he became co-owner of Eastern Iowa Therapeutics P.C. and TJ Rehab Services LLC in Cedar Rapids. Beginning in 1999, Mike continued as a staff physical therapist with responsibilities in long term care including nursing homes and home health care, serving Delaware and Jones counties and running outpatient offices in Edgewood and Strawberry Point. Mike then worked with Above and Beyond Home Health Care until being forced to retire due to health issues in 2016. Following his unexpected retirement, Mike could be found in his basement, wearing sweatpants, working as a freelance Netflix/YouTube critic.
Mike was a true craftsman working with wood. Many of his pieces can be found featured in the homes of his family members across the country. Mike looked forward to his "free" days, adventures meandering across the Midwest, searching for the next antique tool, and sitting on his deck offering unsolicited advice to his unsuspecting neighbors. Mike loved time with family, gourmet cooking and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Twomey of Manchester; his four children, Erin (Taro) Chalupa of Cedar Rapids, Christopher (Lisa) Twomey of Chicago, Megan (Doug Cole) Twomey of Aurora, Colo., and Abby (Brian) Hillebrand of Manchester; nine grandchildren, Hermione and Violet Chalupa, Alice, Patrick, and Jack Twomey, Jameson and Finley Cole, Ava Twomey and Theodore Hillebrand; two siblings, Patrick "Tim" (Mary) Twomey of Tacoma, Wash., and Kathleen (Joseph) Dolinaj of Cedar Rapids; one nephew, Zachary Dolinaj of Minneapolis, Minn.; and his first wife, Mary Boland Twomey.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Marcus Twomey, in 2001; and his grandson, Linus Chalupa, in 2008.
