UPDATE: A high voltage transmission line is offline right now, causing a power outage that's affecting nearly 4,300 customers in parts of Johnson County.
ITC spokesman Tom Petersen says the outage appears to be weather-related. He said crews noticed a power transformer was starting to get a heavy load and they started to re-route power to protect the transformer.
While in the process, they tripped several circuits on the line. As of around 1:30 p.m. at least seven of the nine substations were back online. Crews are working to restore power to the final two which serve the North Liberty area.
There's no estimate either from REC on the number of its customers who are without power, but the following statement was posted on the company's website, “Currently we are experiencing a power outage in the southern part of Linn County REC territory. This is due to a transmission outage. The transmission supplier is working on the problem which affects multiple substations. We will keep you informed as more information becomes available."
